About Fowler

Fowler is a small town, population 5300, in Fresno County, just about 200 miles north of Los Angeles and 200 miles southeast of San Francisco.  Fowler is is only 11 miles southeast of downtown Fresno, but feels a world away.

Fowler is located in the San Joaquin Valley, a largely agricultural central valley of California.  Fowler and the surrounding area includes farmland, much of it family owned and operated, that grows wine and table grapes, raisins, peaches, pomegranates, tomatoes and nuts.  Packing plants are big employers in Fowler.

Fowler is known for its tidy neighborhoods, charming downtown area and successful school district.  There’s an interesting diversity of cultural heritage in Fowler as well.  Many Armenian families have lived in Fowler for generations. Japanese American families played a significant role in Fowler’s history.  There is a growing population of Sikhs in the area who worship at a local temple.  Fowler has many churches and clubs and traditional community events that bring people together.

Cornerstone Theater Company Institute Summer Residency

July 17-August 14, 2011

A Man Comes to Fowler  is produced as part of an annual program, Cornerstone Theater Institute Summer Residency.  Each summer Cornerstone creates a play with a different California community by living within that community for approximately four weeks.  Previous Summer Residencies have taken place in Lost Hills (Kern Co.), Holtville (Imperial County) and Grayson (Stanislaus County), among other places.   This year thirty Cornerstone artists and Institute students from Los Angeles, across the country and from England are temporarily living in Fowler to get to know the community and produce A Man Comes To Fowler.
